Remembering Warren Allmand (June 2017)

pdf available

WFM – Canada Past-President Warren Allmand, who passedx away December 7, 2016, was remembered by many Canadians for his contributions to parliament, the promotion of human rights, his commitment to justice for aboriginal Canadians and the betterment of the City of Montreal, among many other causes. But especially, he is remembered as a great, lifelong World Federalist.

Warren first joined the World Federalists in 1961. The need for a more just and democratically accountable framework of global governance, one that upheld universal human rights and the rule of law, was integral to his worldview throughout his long career in Parliament (1965 to 1997) and after, when he was a leading member of a number of civil society organizations.

Warren was elected President of the World Federalists in 2004, serving in that capacity until August 2016. He had previously worked closely with the World Federalists as a point of contact in Parliament, and operationally as international President of Parliamentarians for Global Action and as President of Canada’s International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development.

A tribute video (watch at http://tiny.cc/Tribute_Warren_Allmand) honouring Warren was presented this past August, at the WFM – Canada national meeting.

In a remembrance of Warren last December, WFM – Canada President Walter Dorn noted, “I had the good fortune of working for him at Parliamentarians for Global Action, on the adoption of the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention. He was not only an influential Canadian MP and Cabinet minister. He made his mark internationally. He was someone who could always be counted on to stand up for the cause of peace and human rights.”
