Banning nuclear weapons

On July 7, 2017 122 states at the United Nations concluded a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Following successful international conferences in 2015 and 2016 on the humanitarian impacts of any use of nuclear weapons, the treaty creates a legal prohibition on the use, threat of use, development, testing, production, manufacturing and possession of nuclear weapons. The problem of course is that all the nuclear-armed states and most NATO members (all except The Netherlands) boycotted the negotiations.

On September 20, 56 Canadian Peace Groups signed on to a statement calling on Canada to sign the nuclear weapons ban treaty. The treaty and its consequences were also a central topic at the 2017 Group of 78 policy conference, which included WFM – Canada as one of the meeting’s partner organizations. Approximately 100 activists participated at the September 22-23 event. In addition to nuclear disarmament, the meeting discussed “sustainable common security” as an overarching framework for foreign policy in a world of diminishing reliance on weapons of mass destruction.
