International Criminal Court Update: The Annual Meeting of the Assembly of States Parties

The Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court held their annual meeting from November 16th to 24th.

Ahead of the session, WFMC organized a meeting between members of Canadian civil society and government officials at Global Affairs Canada, some of whom attended the ASP meeting.

At the ASP meeting, there was discussion of the withdrawals by several African states and the implications that may have for the Court and the Crime of Aggression amendments which have passed the necessary thirty ratifications.

Additionally, the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) launched a Policy on Children. Prosectuor Bensouda had highlighted crimes against children as one of the office’s six strategic goals in its Strategic Plan 2012–2015. Earlier this fall, the OTP released a Policy paper on case selection and prioritisation.

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court has posted detailed daily updates of the meeting.

The meeting’s documentation is available through the website of the ASP’s secretariat.
