Recent peacekeeping developments of interest

On June 19, CBC published an exclusive report titled “Internal documents detail UN peacekeeping requests for Mali, other hotspots: Canada has been offered a number of marquee command roles for UN missions, but declined most of them.” The article begins, “The United Nations has presented Canada with a long list of peacekeeping requests that not only include fronting a dangerous mission in Mali, but separate military and police training deployments, including one in the volatile Central African Republic.” Continue reading here.

In more general peacekeeping news, peacekeepers from the Republic of Congo are to be removed from the mission in Central African Republic after allegations of sexual misconduct. The Code Blue Campaign, which works to end impunity for sexual exploitation and abuse by UN peacekeeping personnel, released a detailed statement on the announcement.
