2021 responses from the New Democratic Party

1) How should Canada support United Nations peacekeeping?

For decades, Canada branded itself as a peacekeeping nation, drawing on a long history of intervening in conflicts around the world. However Canada’s efforts have decreased significantly in recent years. Canada should renew its commitment to peacekeeping and stand by its promises to the international community.

Through peacekeeping operations Canada makes an important contribution to global peace and security and protecting the world’s most vulnerable—that is why it matters to fulfill our promises.

Canada must secure the Security Council seat it lost in 2020. A seat on the UN Security Council would put Canada in a position to do more – to give the world more of Canada.

2) Global Climate Change: What should be Canada’s International Commitments?

Canada must take a global leadership role in helping low-income countries deal with the impacts of climate change. This should include climate financing to help protect the people who are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, as well as living up to new, robust emissions reductions targets here at home. Never again should Canadian leaders stand in the way of international action on climate change.

3) Nuclear disarmament: Which measures intended to promote the realization of a world
without nuclear weapons should Canada support?

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is a bold step towards peace and security. It is a vision for what could be and a commitment to working toward that end. A nuclear-weapon-free world is possible, but it requires courageous action by leaders and countries, like Canada.

Under a New Democrat government, Canada will be a force for peace. We will support nuclear disarmament, recommit to peacekeeping, and make sure that Canadian-made weapons are not fuelling conflict and human rights abuses abroad.

4) What can Canada do to strengthen the United Nations?

Canada should support the UN in reprioritizing its work and focus on achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, while ensuring its own commitments to the 2030 Agenda are fulfilled.

Canada should support peacekeeping reform to ensure UN Peacekeepers area always used to protect human rights, de-escalate conflicts, and ensure security for civilians, especially for women and girls. Oversight of peacekeeping missions designed to ensure these principles is essential to the long-term success of the UN’s efforts.
