The Commission facilitated the decommissioning of arms in the possession of paramilitary groups and reported to the parties to the Good Friday Agreement, a process that lasted until March 2011.

General de Chastelain’s career highlights also include service as Deputy Chief of Staff of the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and Commander of the Canadian contingent there; as Commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada; as Ambassador of Canada to the United States (1993 – 94); and as Chief of Defence Staff (1989 – 93 and 1994 – 95).

WFMC is a national membership organization supporting the application of the principles of federalism to world affairs in order to strengthen global governance and the rule of law. The organization is active on issues such as Canada and peacekeeping, the International Criminal Court and strengthening the United Nations, among others. The WFMC World Peace Award has been presented annually or every second year since 1972. A list of previous recipients is available here.
